In partnership with Western English Language Center, the King's Enhanced Year (KEY) Program is an eight-month program for students who are close to meeting the language proficiency requirements for direct entry to King's University College. By joining the KEY Program, students will strengthen their English, develop fluency and gain confidence while studying in two university-level degree credits to gain a head start on completing their degree at King's.


The KEY program is designed for applicants who are interested in pursuing degree programs/modules in Management and Organizational Studies (BMOS) or Economics. You can review Program Checklists here.

Along with 15 hours of mandatory English as a Second Language (ESL) training, you will be enroled in the following degree courses:

Description The problem of scarcity and its implications, choice; opportunity cost, specialization and exchange; supply and demand; economic choices of households and firms; competition and monopoly; resource markets; public policy; income distribution.

Description Matrix algebra including vectors and matrices, linear equations, determinants. This course is intended primarily for students in the Social Sciences, but may meet minimum requirements for some Science modules.

Description Calculus for the Social Sciences. You must successfully complete the English language courses as well as the degree courses to be eligible to enrol at King’s for the following academic year.

*Unsuccessful completion of either component of the program (English language courses or degree courses) will result in the cancellation of any further registration at King’s at Western.

For whom is the program designed?

One of the following test results must be met:

  • IELTS Minimum Overall Score must be 5.5, all other sections minimum 5.0.
  • TOEFL - Minimum Overall Score of 62, Reading and Listening not below 12, Speaking and Writing not below 16.
  • CAEL - Minimum 35 in all sections
  • PTE Academic - Minimum Overall Score of 43, with no section less than 40.
  • DUOLINGO - Minimum Overall Score of 85, minimum of 85 for each subscore
  • C1/C2 - Minimum Overall Score of 162 (no individual section below 154)

What documents do I need to include in my application?

Students will need to include their high school or college transcripts, as well as proof of current English proficiency results. For details about the application process for degree study, please visit the King's Admissions website.

When is the application deadline?

The deadline for this year is June 1st. However, spaces are limited, and it is recommended that students apply as far in advance of this deadline as possible.

How much does it cost to study in the KEY Program?

September 7th, 2024 – April 30th, 2025, includes EAP and 2.0 University Year 1 credits

Fee: $31,500* (includes tuition and ancillary fees - does not include residence).

What are my housing options?

Students can choose to stay in one of our on-campus residences, or make their own housing arrangements off-campus. Students often choose to stay in residence during their first year and then live off-campus during subsequent years of study. This helps students to better adjust to the Canadian culture and make new friends. King's will help all students make arrangements for on-campus housing.
