British Patterned System: GCE Advanced Level Examination

Applicants presenting GCE Advanced Level courses for admission to Western University will be considered as follows:

a) Applicants seeking admission on the basis of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) must submit three distinct A-Level (or four distinct AS-Level) traditional academic subjects with grades of A and/or B for admission consideration.  General Paper is not acceptable.  Applied Advanced Level subjects are not an ideal preparation for our programs.

b) Students who receive a 'B' grade on final GCE Advanced level exams will receive transfer credit for those courses approved by the appropriate faculty.

c)  Specific prerequisite courses are required for admission to some faculties/programs.  Pre-requisites must be presented at the Advanced or Advanced Subsidiary Level; however, some programs may consider IGCSE/GCSE/Ordinary Level results with a grade of ‘B’ or above to satisfy prerequisites.

d)  Submission of five IGCSE/GCSE/Ordinary Level academic subjects or equivalent is required as reference for past academic success.

  1. GCE Advanced Level and/or Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level documents sent directly to Western from the examining boards as listed below:

    • AQA: Confirmation of Results to a Third Party
    • Cambridge (CIE):  Certifying Statement of Results
    • Edexcel: Certifying Statement of Results
    • OCR: Certifying Statement of Results

Certificates must be official. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable.

Note: Provisional results (i.e. A Statement of Results, Provisional Results Information, Candidate Statement of Provisional Results) will be used for a preliminary evaluation of the final grades until the certificate / certifying statements become available in the fall.  Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor.

Applicants may be considered for conditional admission on the basis of predicted results while in progress in the GCE Advanced Level/Advanced Subsidiary Level courses.  Predicted results and final O-Level results must be submitted directly to Western from the institutions attended.

    • Predicted GCE Grades Form
This online form must be completed by either a Counsellor or Principal from the applicant’s school.  Results submitted by an applicant will not be accepted.
If you are unsure whether you are required to complete this form, please refer to either the “To Do List” in your Student Center or the required documents section of your acknowledgement letter.

The Cambridge Pre-U Certificate or Cambridge International Pre-U diploma may be submitted in lieu or in combination with GCE Advanced Levels.  Certificates must be official. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counselor and submitted directly to Western.  Notarized copies are not acceptable.

  2. GCSE/IGCSE (O-Level) results. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor.
General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations will be considered a pass if marks obtained are A, B, or C.
