A First Generation Student is defined as someone who is the first in their family to attend college, university, or any other post-secondary institution. If a sibling(s) has already attended, or is currently attending post-secondary studies, you are still considered a First Generation Student.
The First Generation program is designed to support the unique experiences and challenges that first-in-family students may encounter while attending post-secondary education. Many First Generation Students find that parents/guardians may not be familiar with King’s academics, finances, and the social aspects of attending university. The excitement of Orientation Week, the pressure of exams, late night studying, and early morning classes are new experiences for any student introduced to university, while First Generation Students find the added challenge of not knowing where to seek guidance and answers.
Our King’s Academic Mentoring Program (KAMP) is a student-led program that aims to provide support and function as a University 101 for incoming students. Student mentors provide an example of academic success and community involvement at King’s. The exemplary experiences and high quality training allow them to provide valuable resources and guidance to incoming students. For additional information, please visit KAMP.
